How do runners work in plants?

I know plants like strawberry plants use runners to reproduce but how exactly does this work?
thank you!

a runner is an adventitious shoot.
it grows as a normal shoot till it reaches a certain length.
normally the equivalent to diameter of a full grown plant.
it then forms roots on its lower surface and creates an independent plant
over a number of years the runners will colonise a large area.
even if the plant due to weather/climate did not flower and produce seed .
it gives the plant an extra survival strategy

hope this helps
