Idk where I recalled reading this, but I think it was in a running magazine, and it said that one day a week you should see how far you can run. Is there any truth to that, or will I injure myself? I’m starting off slow, but because I’m already an athlete, for me that means four miles five days a week. Should I run six or eight miles every Saturday then? I can run six miles pretty easy.
It depends what sorta running you’re doing. I ran Cross Country and for practice we ran about four miles every day except on mondays when we’d run about 8 to 10 miles but the girls ran about what you said 6 to 8. You do that and you’ll be in pretty good shape but just remember to use different routes all the time.

The advice that I hear is to have a long day. You should have one day where you run long distance at a slow pace. It doesn’t have to be as "far as you can run" but just needs to be a long slow run. What that distance is depends on you and what kind of weekly mileage you are running. And remember that this run is meant to be at an easy pace – this is the relaxing run where you take in the scenery and maybe even enjoy the company of friends.
As far as "starting off slow" in your program, that is great advice. Don’t increase to fast or you can really hurt yourself. Don’t increase mileage or speed more than 10% a week, and don’t increase both at the same time. And don’t forget to have at least one day a week where you don’t run.

"Long Runs: are typically 25-30% of your weekly mileage or so and are usually done once a week. These are usually done at a comfortable, fairly easy pace. We often refer to them here as LSD — long, slow distance. An appropriate long run distance is determined by your goals. A long run might be anywhere from 5 miles to 25 or more (for an ultramarathoner)."
