Know your rug sizes since these come in sheets like 3x4, 6x8 , 10x12 etc.. You cut these to fit and you can have a couple pcs if you have long runners like you said. They have a "tackiness" to them and they will gather dirt and dust over time and you can toss in the washer and they come back to life and can be reused. Shelf liners will leave a residue that will attract dirt and possible stain the carpet below. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar .. It works with traction under the runner and won't move on the carpet. They have a sticky quality to them that the mats for hard floors do not. The only way you can get around this, short of sewing it on, is to use a double stick tape and tape it on.
