How to fit a runner carpet on a staircase, with stair rods and Easybind carpet edging.

I have recently purchased a runner to put on my stairs. Is it necessary to use glue, carpet pads and tackless strips when installing? Can I get away with just using staples? The stairs in my home are old and I plan to replace them in the next couple of years. The house is 60 years old and I assume the stairs are the original ones that were constructed in the house. The reason I am asking this is that I plan to take the runner up within the next couple of years to replace the ugly stairs and I think it would be more difficult to take it up if I used glue.
Thanks,
It varies with the type of runner exactly, but most runners are just stapled down. You can rent a regular carpet stapler at most all tool rental places.
