I recently purchased an area rug for my living room, it is beautiful!!! Although it is a solid color, the material is very unique and i was wondering should i just purchase the same rug for the runner (they only come in 3 colors and the other colors don’t match my decor). I live in a condo by the way, very open, spacious floor plan. Thanks in advance

1. Yes you should use the same colour as unity & cohesiveness do wonders against complication.
2. But having said that it is plain in colour, it might not stand the heavy traffic along the entrance.
3. Do you really need a runner in the first place???

The rug I am using for the stair runner is persian-like and "plush" (so cut pile). I recently had other wall to wall carpeting installed and was going to use the left-over carpet pad, but it just looks too thick! I am afraid it will give a "bubble" look. Is there a protocol?

If you get an istaller then have them bring samples – dont spend lots of money on the pad – it is simply not that important (just find something that will give you the level of thickness you desire and dont let them talk you into something expensive). If you are doing it yourself then something like: http://www.amazon.com/Runner-Underlay-Ultra-Grade-Rubber/dp/B002ZQAA2U should do the trick!

Hope I was able to help,

How much will it cost if a professional have to do it?

If it’s costly, how can i do it?

If you have a solid area rug, and you cut the arched shape yourself, the binding cost shouldn’t end up being too much. Just to give you an idea, we charge $3/linear foot for machine-binding and $12 for hand-binding. That is roughly want professional binding will end up costing you. Where you may run into issues is if you bring in a pro to do the measuring and cutting and arching and whatnot and also if you opt for a patterned rug instead of a solid color. If you’re in the DC-metro area and need some assistance, please look us up. Best of luck!

I have been slowly finishing my basement and for the in-term I would like finish the stairs way off so it is not such an eye sore. I was going to paint or stain the stairs but I find that other stairways finished off this way seem to be slippery. I would like to put a rug runner to minimize the risk of slipping but since there will still be construction going on it will constantly be dirty. I ran across a bamboo rug runner which had small horizontal slats, a rubber backing, and a nice material boarder. I think it would look good and it could be workable to staple it to the stairs but I am a bit afraid of the bamboo being just as slippery as painted stairs. Does any one have any experience with bamboo or any suggestions?

painter since 1980 theres a types of porch and stair paint at the walmart with sand or plastic beads in the paint for traction also theres a spray paint for traction from most lowes or depots but theres also a tape thats good for this it goes across the stairs if you want to carpet just do it last see always work from cielings down from farthest out to the door when doing any project i asked my boss why we worked out to the door by the drive ways and he said so we can get the check to the bank quicker and cash it before they cancel it hahahah no really work down the rooms and out to the doors that way when the flooring goes down no fuss no muss

Call up the Home Depot. When I worked there several years ago, they had a carpet binding service available. I don’t know if they will bind carpets not purchased there, but it’s worth a shot. Just call a rug binder, tell them your situation, and see what they can do…

My friend and I just got an apartment. It’s a living room, then a hallway/kitchen, then a bedroom with bathroom. Very small. The problem is it has tile floors and they’re freezing and actually just the whole house is freezing. It is usually warmer outside then in our apartment. We’ve been told the fan heater in the wall costs a lot to use from a neighbor but that hardly did anything anyway. We have an area rug and a runner for the kitchen but it seems like you can feel the cold coming off the tile. Any ideas to make us warm?

The only way to warm up an existing tile floor is to cover it with area rugs which you may want to add additional warmth protection with carpet padding underneath.

It sounds like you may be in a north facing direction which does not get a lot of exposure to the sun. Keep the drapes open during the day and close them at night to keep the warmth inside. Thermal lined drapery panels will help with keep the warmth inside. You may want to invest in portable heaters if the heater you already have is ineffective. A portable heater can be moved to the room where you need it on demand.

Lastly, do not walk around barefoot or just in your socks. Body heat is lost through the feet and standing on a cold surface will drain the heat out of your body. So, invest n come comfortable fluffy lined lined slippers that you an wear socks with. L L Bean.com has a great selection.
