Carpet rods? How much space each side to leave?

I want to fit carpet rods onto my new stair case with carpet runner. How many inches do i need to allow each side of the carpet for it to look neat?

the carpet itself is 20 inches. Was thinking 2 inches either side. Will that work?

    carpet runner for stairs was 27 inches wide, so set the clips at 271/2
    fit carpet, fit rods

    No more than 1/2 inch on both sides. Before screwing the ends just place them on both sides of the carpet and see which measurement you like best.
