I am trying to construct a history of AHL franchise shifts. I am working from the data provided by Wikipedia.
There is some confusing content which I’ll show here:
Please note the lines that start with (X).
Montreal Voyageurs (1969-1971; became Nova Scotia Voyageurs)
Nova Scotia Voyageurs (1971-1984; became Sherbrooke Canadiens)
Sherbrooke Canadiens (1984-1990; became Fredericton Canadiens)
Fredericton Canadiens (1990-1999; became Quebec Citadelles)
(X) Quebec Citadelles (1999-2002; became Hamilton Bulldogs)
(X) Hamilton Bulldogs (1996-2002; became Toronto Roadrunners)
Toronto Roadrunners (2003-2004; became Edmonton Road Runners)
Edmonton Road Runners (2004-2005; dormant)
The data suggest that when the Bulldogs moved to Toronto, the Qubec Citadelles became the new Bulldogs franchise. Please clarify this for me. Thank you very much.
Oops, forgot to include this data:
Nova Scotia Oilers (1984-1988; became Cape Breton Oilers)
Cape Breton Oilers (1988-1996; became Hamilton Bulldogs)
You have all been very helpful and informative. Thank you.
The Hamilton Bulldogs were a split squad that shared prospects from both the Oilers and the Habs so in other words, they were one farm team for 2 NHL teams, if that helps any. I am only REAL familiar with the NS Vees (Voyageurs)-they were something else too. Where I get lost on your list is 1990 because from 1988-1993 the AHL had a team called the Halifax Citadels (Quebec farm squad) and during that time-scratch that actually because I see you are just talking Habs here.
Yes, I would say your confusion comes from the fact that the Hamilton Bulldogs were 2 teams-the Oilers and the Habs.
Check http://www.hockeydb.com and see if you can find some media guides either at used bookstores or the local library to help you get the info that you need.

This is the best I could find…hope it helps:
"July 3, 2002
The Hamilton Bulldogs were purchased by a local consortium of business people and became the AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens. For the 2002-03 season only, the Bulldogs were affiliated with both the Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers prospects would play in Toronto for the 2003-04 season."

The Habs and Oilers shared the team for one season. Hence the confusion. The next year the Oilers created the Roadrunners and moved them to TO. The Habs then became the sole parent club of the Bulldogs.
